The concept was guided by the lyrics of “NIGHTSHIFT”. In the song, Jujulipps talks about working the grind at a job you hate to pay the bills to support yourself working hard towards your passions. We resonate with this deeply. NO SLEEP!
We have our two main characters. “Night Shift” Juju, and “Superstar” Juju. We created “Superstar” as this semi ghoulish character that haunts “Night Shift” Juju is a symbol of the dreams and aspirations that follow us around sometimes causing trouble.
The prep for this video was extensive. This was our third collaboration with DoP Ben Montgomery so we had a solid understanding of what works and what doesn’t. Ben and Jaya scouted the location at least a dozen times, spending countless hours refining the shot list to ensure a clear plan going into the shoot.
Ben developed a distinctive visual language that perfectly captured the creepiness and spookiness we were after. The core look revolved around blues and oranges, accentuated by pops of red and pink.
Grip-connoisseur Tommy Davis built a custom trolley rig, allowing us to achieve an ultra-smooth hero POV shot that elevated the entire production.
Night Shift was made thanks to our incredible friends and whanau. We couldn’t have done it without them all. This is the part of filmmaking that makes us cry: Seeing all the incredible people who turned up on a freezing Sunday morning to hang out in a dusty storage unit for 10 hours, all because they f**k with us and our visions.
We decided to put a weird and wacky twist on the concept, which led to the Unit Creatures. This idea emerged after we secured our location. We were aiming for a spooky vibe and wanted to layer in some of our trademark absurdity.
The brief was: Imagine different types of people who use storage units to engage in activities they don't want others to see: A Kiwi Bloke having a big cry, an obsessive Jujulipps fan, and stoners playing with Barbies.
Character and story are at the heart of every project. Jaya's goal was to create a mini story arc for each storage unit scene with Superstar Juju’s appearance and the climax.
Shout out to Andre for giving us free rein at the location!
Because Juju is an actual superstar, we were able to bring on board two of the most exciting creatives in the game: Tallulah (Look Bomb) for Hair & Makeup and Estelle for Costume/Styling. And to say they slayed is an understatement. Estelle worked with Finn Duffy and Adrian Williams to create custom draped and bedazzled pieces for both looks. Tallulah nailed the makeup, experimenting with contacts and laying the wigs like a boss.
