This video is intensely character-driven, flipping the classic villain trope on its head. Our "Lady" character takes on the role of the villain. While the ghoul,”Jenny Greenteeth” traditionally menacing, becomes a passive captive. By the end of the video, the Lady’s predatory approach makes the audience feel like they’re in danger.
We aimed to keep viewers guessing about where the story would lead. A key inspiration was the work of Frida Kahlo, as these two characters symbolize two sides of the same coin. Five points if you can spot which of her paintings we referenced.
The madness behind the method
Skilaa are our nearest and dearest. We have been long time fans so it was a dream to make our first music video for them and they truly let us run wild with this concept. When developing the idea, the lyrics of the song heavily influenced the direction of the piece.
This is also the song that saw them reach the top 5 for a Silver Scroll award in 2024. Having our video play at the ceremony was, again, truly an #honourandapriviledge
Our DOP Will Prosor used a hefty stack of camera filters to create a dream-like space. Special shout out to Imagezone for hooking us up with a sick package, and supporting all our other projects.
We wanted to begin the video fully embedded in each world, lost in layered textures and immersive details. But slowly, we begin to zoom out, revealing the sets and shifting perspectives. By the end, it’s all broken down, you see it all.
Thanks to the generosity of the Taro Patch and their space, we were able to create all these worlds. They let us repurpose a bunch of their resources, which became the foundation of our backdrops. Building and dressing the scenes took about a week, with friends and band members dropping in and out to help. Special shout out to Tameka Vahatu who spent hours with us, meticulously hand-painting the textures and breathing life into each set. It was truly a team effort—right down to Jazz’s split fingernail that still hasn’t recovered.
Jaya comes from an acting background and has a special affinity for performance-driven projects. There was no question about casting for Jenny; Amanda Tito, one of the most dynamic and talented actors around, was the clear choice. Amanda brought this character to life in a way only she could.
For the role of Lady, Bianca brought the perfect mix of damsel and villain. She designed all her costumes and fully embodied her character, blending innocence with a sneaky edge that gradually turns sinister. Her shift from sweetness to danger added just the right tension and nuance we wanted.
Abigail came on board to design our monster and drew inspiration from the folktale "Jenny Greenteeth," a river-hag who pulls children and the elderly into the water. We aimed for a Gollum-esque character —creepy yet strangely adorable once dragged out of the swamp. With her experience on larger productions like Sweet Tooth, Abigail brought invaluable expertise to the character design.
