GAME OVER

BTS Image

Our concept for Game Over went through massive transformations throughout the creative process. In the end, it came down to budget. Low budget means less access to resources like proper studios. So, we built our own! Our team built the black box rig out of cranking stands, blacks, par cans lights, and a black perspex floor. A small space managed to look so vast on camera. This look, which was inspired by Kanye West’s 2015 Glastonbury performance, was thanks to our Director of Photography Ben Montgomery and the team at Bounce Lighting.

Creating our own rig came with its own set of challenges. HOT TIP! Blacks are really dusty. And perspex shows every spec of dust that even the best microfiber cloth cannot tackle. If you pause the video to zoom in on the dust, we will haunt you in your sleep.

Early concepts of the video involved heavy use of mylar as a light reflection tool. We played with the ghoulish ways that a mirror can contort a face into a monsters. A gentle nod to genre. But mylar is a trickly material to work with. So we drove halfway to Waiuku to purchase the biggest bendable mirror we could find. And the results ended up looking pretty trippy. Although we had to be careful when working with it because staring at it for too long induces a headache.

It was important to Juju to have multiple looks for the video. One of the looks included killer floor-length braids. In order to accommodate the wigs for the other looks, we had to chop off 13 hours worth of braiding work. It was painful to watch but #artispain.

Lads lads lads, build build build.

When crew are working for super low rates, it is imperative to be able to provide a good feed at the very least. So we catered the morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea ourselves. This meant we could make a nutritious and delicious meal for a fraction of the cost of a catering company. We do our best to think of every little detail, down to the tongs for the corn chips. And that’s how J-Squared Catering came to be. A catering company that is absolutely not available for hire.

Our black box space allowed us to incorporate effects in the edit, which elevated the video to an entirely new level. It complemented the duplicates created by the mirror, blending in-camera effects with simple VFX.
